Earth ground testers measure the resistance of the earth in electrical systems, ensuring that the ground is properly established for the safe operation of the system. Grounding is important to prevent electric shock and damage to equipment and ensure stability within an electrical system. Specifically, earth ground testers measure the resistance between the earth and the grounding system such that it is low enough to safely dissipate the electrical currents in the case of a fault.

Common Types of Earth Ground Testers

Three-Point Method Testers: These are the most common type of testers and make use of three probes—the current probe, the potential probe, and the earth probe. This tester sends current through the earth and measures the voltage difference between the potential probe and the earth probe. The resistance is then calculated based on Ohm's law.

Clamp-on Ground Testers: These testers do not require the disconnection of the ground system or the use of additional electrodes. They use a clamp that goes around the ground conductor, thereby measuring the resistance without making direct contact with the earth.

Fall-of-Potential Testers: These devices are commonly used for more detailed testing of ground resistance. They take a reading of the potential difference between a known electrode and the earth's grounding system, which can be much more accurate for getting the value of resistance.

Stateless Ground Resistance Testers: These testers use an improved method to measure the resistance of the ground in most areas, eliminating the requirement felt by many for using auxiliary electrodes. They may be used where it may be impossible or highly problematic to use other methods in certain locations that are either hard to reach or far.
